He has the desirable Jubilee King sire line while the rest of his pedigree is Old Vermont, thus bringing together these two grand families and continuing the tradition of J. C. Brunk’s work of mating Daniel Lambert sires with Old Vermont mares. Cimarron, foaled in 1986, was one of the later sons of that grand stallion, Criterion who was foaled in 1961. Criterion’s sire, Jubilee’s Courage, was foaled in 1944, and his sire, Jubilee King, was foaled in 1927. This is getting back to the old blood very quickly and from a long-lived line of horses. Criterion was a lovely, good tempered, upheaded, correct, stallion with three excellent gaits who sired 71 get noted for their smoothness, sense, willingness and beauty. His sire, Jubilee’s Courage, with limited opportunity at stud, still had 39 get to his credit, many of whom went on into the breeding ranks as well as being excellent using horses. His sire, Jubilee King, is one of the greats of the breed and perhaps the apex of J. C. Brunk’s breeding program—a program noted for its many excellent Morgans. Jubilee King had 85 get, with many of both his sons and daughters founding their own families. The good that Jubilee King did for this breed is nearly incalculable and much has been written about this great sire. Of Jubilee King’s three grandparents, three of them had the Daniel Lambert sire line, and one of them had a dam who also had the Daniel Lambert sire line. The other grandparent was a son of the great Knox Morgan. One mare line was strong Black Hawk, the grandsire of Daniel Lambert, and the other mare lines were the Old Vermont blood. This is very typical of J. C. Brunk’s breeding, using a careful blend of line breeding and out crossing. For the last part of his life, Jubilee King was with Frances Bryant of Vermont, who carefully continued in Brunk’s path, breeding her Daniel Lambert stallion Jubilee King to mares of Old Vermont breeding. The mare Townshend Lass had the highest percent of Justin Morgan blood of any Morgan of her era—or any era since. Put to Jubilee King, she produced Jubilee’s Courage. Townshend Lass was a lovely, compact mare who was sired by the wonderfully beautiful and typey John A. Darling. Courage was then bred to Lippitt Robrita a good daughter of that grand stallion Lippitt Rob Roy and out of the excellent broodmare Alrita. Rob Roy was the sire of 76 get, many of them noted performance and breeding horses. He was a kind gentleman and very handsome. His pedigree was one of intense Old Vermont Morgans. Alrita was a beautiful mare of true old type and correctness. Foaled in 1935, she had 13 produce to her credit many of whom were excellent breeding horses who founded dynasties of their own. Her parents were half siblings, both being by Sir Ethan Allen who through his dam line had a cross back to Daniel Lambert. The rest of her pedigree was the Old Vermont Morgans. The result of Jubilee’s Courage and Lippitt Robrita was Criterion. He had breeding strength throughout his pedigree being the product of generations of careful breeding by people who truly knew Morgans. Cimarron’s dam, Quietude Rosewood was a lovely, smooth, correct mare who was the result of some of the best of the Old Vermont breeding. Her sire Dyberry Royalton, foaled in 1954, spent most of his life in obscurity with little chance at breeding. Late in life he was given a chance to breed on and had a few good ones before his death. A handsome correct stallion, he brought the breeding program of Dr. C. D. Parks forward. His sire Lippitt George had some excellent Morgans for Dr. Parks, with many of the stallions going on to found good families. His dam was Lippitt Georgia, that feisty mare who was dam of many important and good Lippitts. Her dam was Lippitt Gladys Moro, who also was the dam of many important and good Lippitts. She was by Lippitt Moro and out of Nekomia, making her a full sister of the great Lippitt Miss Nekomia. This line of mares had their full share of fire and spark, but coupled with good sense and smarts. The dam of Dyberry Royalton was Westfall Blythe, dam of 11 in her life. Her sire line is very similar to that of Lippitt George. Her dam was Lippitt Bridget who also was dam of many good Lippitts. Bridget’s sire was Moro, sire of Lippitt Moro, and Bridget’s dam was Nekomia, thus making her a near sister to Lippitt Gladys Moro. With five crosses to the easy tempered Ashbrook, Dyberry Royalton was more mellow then the fiery Nekomias but retained their toughness. The dam of Quietude Rosewood, Stillwater Rosemary, was an intensely Nekomia bred mare. Her sire was Stillwater Commander and her dam was his half sister, Stillwater Emelita, who was the result of a full brother to sister cross. Commander’s dam, Lippitt Victoria, was a lovely correct Morgan who while having many produce had very few Lippitts. She was sired by Lippitt Victory, that wonderfully calm stallion owned by the photographer Warren Patriquin. There is a grand picture of Victory standing calmly in a Boston street with a parade going by and Warren is standing in the saddle, not touching the reins, taking photos of the parade. Victory’s pedigree is much the same as that behind Dyberry Royalton. Victoria’s dam was out of Lippitt Trixie, who had Knox Morgan close up, and brings that line from a source other then that of Whippoorwill Duke who was a Trixie great-grandson. The sire of Stillwater Commander was Moro Hill’s Adonis, a strikingly handsome and typey stallion who sired many good ones. Adonis was by Dyberry Ethan, a most notable sire and very correct and handsome stallion. Ethan, like Dyberry Royalton, was by Lippitt George. Ethan was out of Lippitt Miss Nekomia, the great dam and endurance ride competitor. Nekomia was famous for her beauty and for having a foal every year and then competing in the Vermont 100 Mile Ride each fall. She was also famous for her opinionatedness, as well as her good sense and toughness. The dam of Rosemary was Stillwater Emelita, a lovely, correct, true Morgan who was an excellent riding horse as well as dam. Her parents were the full siblings Moro Hill’s Adonis and Moro Hill’s Emelyn. Both were by Dyberry Ethan and out of Lippitt Gay Locket who was a foundation mare for Margaret & Chet Treftc’s Moro Hill’s program. Locket’s pedigree was much the same as the rest of the Lippitt behind Rosewood, some of the best of Robert Lippitt Knight’s early breeding.
