Golden Wintermist
Palomino Mare, Foaled 1994
Golden Sonfield X Shawalla Gerri
Bred by John and Jeannine Smith
Woodland Park, Colorado

Currently owned by Wendy LeGate, OGO Morgans, Golden Wintermist is in foal to Vining LeMar for an August 2009 foal. She was sired by Golden Sonfield who in turn was sired by the very well known Palomino stallion Desert Sands, owned by the late Steve Reeves. Desert Sands was a colorful in a time when palominos were not popular in the Morgan world. Despite that he succeeded in virtually all disciplines under saddle and in harness. He won Championships in Park saddle, Western Pleasure and driving. His most remembered appearances however were as a Parade Horse at the annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade for an unprecedented seven years straight. In addition to being a beautiful, true Golden color the breeding behind Desert Sands is nothing to discount at all. He was sired by Jeanne Mehl’s stallion Merry Warlock, an own son of Mabel Owen’s Merry Knox. Merry Warlock was a very well known and used stallion in the Pacific North West while Merry Knox made his fame and reputation back east in New England. Merry Warlock’s dam was the famous broodmare Conniedale by Lippitt Croyden Ethan out of Annadale. Conniedale was the dam of seventeen foals including Easter Twilight and Katie Twilight by Lippitt Sam Twilight, as well as being the dam of six other foals by Merry Knox, two by Squire Burger and three more in addition to those. Annadale dam of Conniedale was a half sister to Flyhawk being out of Florette but by the Government stallion Monterey. Lippitt Croyden Ethan was by Lippitt Ethan Ash out of Croyden Mary. Lippitt Ethan Ash was bred by Robert Lippitt Knight and he carried 328 crosses to Justin Morgan. He was sired by Ashbrook and out of Trilby. This is Foundation Lippitt breeding of the highest caliber. Merry Knox sire of Merry Warlock was himself the sire of forty eight Morgan foals. He was bred by Mabel Owen of Merrylegs Farm, in MA. He was a horse of approximately half US Government Farm breeding and half of Brunk breeding. Sired by Meade bred by the USDA Morgan Farm, out of April Showers, Merry Knox was a very handsome, very 1 typy , chestnut stallion. Meade was sired by Goldfield out of Glady. Both Goldfield and Glady were sired by Mansfield. Meade himself had a reputation as a very hot, spirited stallion. He certainly was a very good looking horse and an excellent mover. Goldfield’s dam was Juno by Forester out of Gertrude. Forester was by Meteor 2nd out of Eleanor Gates by General Gates. Meteor 2nd went back to Black Hawk Morgan while Lady Alice the dam of Meteor 2nd went back to Bulrush through Morrill. General Gates , sire of Eleanor Gates , went back to Sherman in tail male lines, while Ellen, the dam of Eleanor Gates went back to Sherman through Daniel Lambert and back to Bulrush through Benedict Morrill. So it’s fair to say that while at first glance Merry Knox was half Government bred and half Brunk bred, in reality he has far more Sherman blood coming through him than appears at first. Juno’s dam Gertrude, was by General Gates as well, her dam was Caroline by Daniel Lambert out of Cleopatra who went back to Morrill and back to Sherman again through General Putnam – her sire.

Meade’s dam Glady was out of Lady Sealect. Lady Sealect was by Select out of My Lady Knox. Select by Sir Ethan Allen, was out of Bell Marea by Knox Morgan. My Lady Knox was also by Knox Morgan. Sir Ethan Allen went back to Ethan Allen 3rd, and while that line does eventually go back to Ethan Allen 50 to Sherman, it also goes back to Woodbury Morgan through Gifford more often. Sir Ethan Allen did have a line to Billy Root by Sherman and again to Ethan Allen 50 through his dam -the Walter Russell mare. It is the two crosses here to Knox Morgan that in part gave Merry Knox his name.

April Showers was the dam of Merry Knox. She was sired by Squire Burger and out of Easter Maid. Squire Burger was by Juzan out of Nella by Allen King. Juzan was by Jubilee King out of Liza Jane by Knox Morgan. Allen King was a full brother to Penrod who was the sire of Jubilee King. Easter Maid was by Jubilee King and out of Allana by Allen King. Making her a half sister to Nella. Allana’s dam was Ruby Reade by Charles Reade who was by Woodward’s Ethan Allen by Ethan Allen 50 by Black Hawk. The dam of Charles Reade was Princess Dagmar by Daniel Lambert and her dam was a granddaughter of Ethan Allen 50 as well. This line, that 2 of April Showers is extremely concentrated Sherman blood. Squire Burger’s line is only a little less so, the difference being his two crosses to Knox Morgan through Liza Jane who also carried the blood of Allen Franklin, sire of Allen King, and that of JC Brunk’s famous mare Senata.{mospagebreak}

Desert Sands’s dam was Lady Sungold. Lady Sungold was bred by Steve Reeves and had multiple championships in various pleasure divisions when she was being shown. Lady Sungold was by Dickie’s Pride out of Linn’s Lu. Dickie’s Pride was bred by the LU Sheep Company. He was sired by Flying Jubilee out of Dawn Mist by Fillmore. Flying Jubilee was bred by Sam Doak, and owned by Ern Pedler who wrote so many excellent stories about Flying Jubilee using the name Little Fly. Flying Jubilee was by Flyhawk out of Juvina by Jubilee King. Flyhawk by Go Hawk out of Florette. Florette being by Allen King out of the Knox Morgan daughter Florence Chandler . Florence Chandler was bred by JC Brunk. Her dam was Brunk’s famous mare Senata by Senator out of Daisy. That Daisy was by Billy Bodette and carried 22 crosses to Justin Morgan- through Sherman mainly. She was one of the Brunk Foundation mares. Juvina’s dam was Jeanne by Knox Reade by Knox Morgan . Jeanne’s dam was Jean Ann by Sentiment who was by Major Reade. Knox Reade’s dam was Mrs. Lewis by Charles Reade . Charles Reade was the sire of Major Reade as well. Mrs. Lewis’s dam was Bess Franklin a granddaughter of Ben Franklin by Chetco and out of Bessie by Mountaineer X the Joseph Barber Mare by Billy Folsum. Mountaineer carried the blood of Billy Root, the other “famous Billy” which go back directly to Sherman Morgan. Dawn Mist, dam of Dickie’s Pride was by Fillmore ( Mansfield x Narissa) , out of Quita by Highview King out of Luxury. Highview King was by King De Jarnette out of Sentola ( a full sister to Jubilee King). King De Jarnette was by Jubilee King out of Deura by Senator Knox out of Penala by Penrod ( sire of Jubilee King) out of Galva. Galva was Sherman Morgan on both sides of her pedigree being by Billy Herod – going back to Sherman through King Herod and Sherman Black Hawk, while her dam Chista was by the Ben Franklin son Chetco and her dam -Lucy-was by Billy Bodette. Luxury the dam of Quita was another LU mare, being by Night Tide out of Mallow. Night Tide was bred by JC Brunk. His sire was Tiffany by Mansfield and his 3 dam was Glenalla by Allen King out of Ruby Reade. Luxury out of Mallow brings in a divergence in breeding. Mallow was by Linspar out of Larkspur by Flyhawk. While Linspar was by Linsley out of Sparbelle. Linsley’s dam was Sunflower Maid by Headlight Morgan- bringing in Woodbury Morgan through Gifford via Hale’s Green Mountain Morgan, and Bulrush through Winnabago Chief back to Morrill who appears twice through Sunflower Maid’s dam Fanny P. Sparbelle being by Sparhawk brought in more Sherman blood through Captain Herod via Dart and Dude, as well as more Ben Franklin through Bess Franklin, dam of Dart, sire of Sparhawk. This line also brings in the blood of St. L by Rancho out of Ben’s Daisy by Ben Franklin. Rancho was by the Canadian Francois Bourke horse. Through Lucy Hale, dam of Sparhawk we get more Woodbury blood through Young Gifford Morgan. Donbelle, dam of Sparbelle was of what is called Ancient Vermont blood. She went back to Woodbury and to Sherman . Woodbury through Gifford via Hale’s Green Mountain Morgan, and Sherman through Ethan Allen 50, Billy Root and the Streeter Horse. Larkspur who was th dam of Mallow was by Flyhawk but out of Eula, an LU mare by Morgan Patch who was a grandson of Dan Patch a very famous trotting horse. Linn’s Lu , dam of Lady Sungold was by Dapper Dan out of Lulin. Dapper Dan was by Trilson out of Bess Gates. Bess Gates was by Gay Mac out of Bessie Ro. Gay Mac in turn was by the US Government Morgan Horse Farm premier stallion Mansfield. Mansfield was by Bennington by General Gates out of Mrs. Culvers. It is almost impossible to find a Morgan Horse today without Mansfield on the papers. So wide an influence has Mansfield had. Mrs. Culvers the dam of Bennington was brought into the Government Farm breeding program from KY, in an effort to increase size in the herd. She was a great granddaughter of Gist’s Black Hawk Morgan by Blood’s Vermont Black Hawk, by Black Hawk , son of Sherman Morganone of the three most famous breeding sons of Justin Morgan. General Gates was by Denning Allen out of Fanny Scott, a mare of primarily Thoroughbred breeding. Denning Allen, however was all Morgan, with multiple crosses to Sherman Morgan through Black Hawk. Denning Allen also carries a cross to Woodbury Morgan, and one , more rare to Red Robin, another son of Justin Morgan, though a lessor known 4 son.

Artemsia was the dam of Mansfield, and through her is a link to what is considered as Ancient Morgan lineage breeding. She was by Ethan Allen 3rd out of the Harrison Orcutt Mare. Ethan Allen 3rd ( Borden’s ) was by Ethan Allen 2nd (Peter’s) son of Peter’s Vermont by Green Mountain Morgan and going back to Gifford Morgan by Woodbury Morgan, another of the three most famous breeding sons of Justin Morgan. The cross of Bennington and Artemsia has long been considered a “golden cross” and it is one which has produced the backbone of not only the WWF, but of all of today’s Morgans who can be considered of Government breeding. Dewdrop the dam of Gay Mac was by General Gates out of Ellen. Ellen was a Vermont bred mare, standing 15.2 hands with nine crosses to Justin Morgan, through all three famous sons, Sherman, Woodbury, and Bulrush. She was owned and registered by Joseph Battell and kept as a broodmare at the Government Farm. She produced 14 foals, 13 of whom were filly foals. She was a big, smooth, upheaded mare and beautifully bred. She was one of the best of the Government broodmares. Ellen carried her line to Bulrush through Morrill, by The Jennison Colt a grandson of Bulrush. Gifford Morgan by Woodbury is on her pedigree as well as Motion by Daniel Lambert going back to Sherman Morgan.{mospagebreak}

Bessie Ro was the dam of Bess Gates. She was by Querido ( full brother to Mansfield) and out of Roboss by Red Oak. Bessie Ro was bred by Roland G. Hill of California, and again is considered pure WWF. Roland G. Hill bought many of his mares from Richard Sellman of Rochelle, TX. The Sellman name is revered by breeders of the Working Western Family, and horses of his breeding’s lines are highly sought to this day. After the death of Richard Sellman, his horses were dispersed, and as in the case of Roland G. Hill, some of the mares went to California breeders, becoming in turn the basis for the Morgans we now call old California bred. Others went to Quarter Horse breeders in Texas, lost to the Morgan breed, but a goodly part of the Foundation Quarter Horse as we know it today. 5

Roboss was a 1920 mare who is among the most highly sought. She was out of Bossie A , also bred by Richard Sellman. Bossie A represents the very heart of Sellman’s breeding program- she by Major Antoine out of daughter of Major Gordon. Major Antoine was by Meteor Jr. by Meteor by Young Rix who was a son of Chieftain, who was a son of Black Hawk by Sherman Morgan. For the most part these were 16 hand horses either black or brown in color, and from Vermont. From Major Antoine on this is considered solid mid-western breeding which is the basis of Sellman’s breeding. Most go back to Sherman Morgan, some through Black Hawk. Some go to Woodbury and Bulrush such as Octoroon who is behind Bossie Gordon, the dam of Bossie A. Major Gordon who has the blood of Octoroon also has a line to The Hawkins Horse by Justin Morgan through Joe Brown by Davy Crockett by The Hawkins Horse. Major Gorden also had a line to Woodbury through Comet who was by The Chittendon County Morgan by Putnam Morgan by Woodbury. Comet has this exact breeding on both the top and bottom of his pedigree. In his day Comet was undefeated as a show horse and after he left his home state of Vermont, and went to Kentucky – was considered one of the very best sires in that state. Again, a strong blend of the three famous sons, with lines to lessor known sons , which was characteristic of the Sellman breeding program as the horses were known to be and bred to be sound, hard using stock. Red Oak the sire of Roboss, was by General Gates out of Marguerite, who was by White River Morgan who traces to Woodbury Morgan on both top and bottom of this pedigree. Red Oak was bred by Joseph Battell, and some say he was the best son of General Gates. Certainly the the Ancient Vermont blood of his dam Marguerite was a contributing factor in that. For in addition to Woodbury Marguerite also has the blood of an unnamed daughter of Justin Morgan behind her. Trilson, sire of Dapper Dan was sired by Katrilan Prince who was bred by the Hearst Sunical Land and Packing Co. of California. Katrilan Prince’s dam was Princess Allan by Querido X Tab. Trilson’s dam was Roseta May by Sonfield out of Roseta Mala. Already we see a pattern emerging- that of the blending of Old California blood with that of Querido of US Government Farm breeding. Katrilan Prince was by Katrilan out of Princess Allan by Querido. Katrilan 6 was by Uhlan by Bennington . Katrilan was bred by WR Hearst of California. His dam was Katrina C by Querido out of the Sellman bred Red Oak daughter-Rokit. Uhlan’s dam was Poinsetta. Poinsetta was by Troubadour of Willowmoor out of Babe by Bob Morgan. Uhlan was US Government Farm bred. Babe by Bob Morgan, on his side of the pedigree goes back to both Sherman and Woodbury. On Babe’s dam’s side – Babe’s dam was the Coe Mare- she goes back to Sherman through Daniel Lambert and via Cobden ( sire of the Coe Mare) she has Red Robin by Justin Morgan as well. Babe also has two lines to Ethan Allen by BlackHawk. This makes Poinsetta , dam of Uhlan especially rich in Sherman blood through Ethan Allen on both sides,as well as Daniel Lambert, and his line to Jubilee De Jarnette – on Troubadour of Willowmoor’s pedigree. Uhlan being by Bennington by General Gates was a tail male Sherman bred horse. Going from the past to the more present, the dam of Katrilan Prince- Princess Allan was by Querido and her dam was the Sellman bred mare Tab . Tab was by Texas Allen out of Birdie by Major Antoine. Texas Allen was by Easter Allen Morgan, a son of Headlight Morgan. Easter Allen’s dam was Bessie Morgan by Flying Morrill. The Morrills went back to Bulrush Morgan. Bessie Morgan’s dam was Sunrise who went back to both Woodbury and to Sherman. Tab’s dam Birdie by Major Antoine was out of Dolly Bonner by Old Jordan who was said to be Morgan. Major Antoine was by Meteor Jr by Meteor. Major Antoine’s dam was Molly Lee by General Lee. On both sides of Major Antoine’s pedigree he goes back over and over to Sherman Morgan through BlackHawk. He did have a couple of lines to Woodbury via Gifford, and one to Brutus by Justin Morgan through his dam Molly Lee. Roseta May was the dam of Trilson. Roseta May was by Sonfield out of Roseta Mala. Roseta May was bred by Roland G. Hill, her dam Roseta Mala was also bred by Hill. Sonfield was sired by Mansfield out of Quietude by Troubadour of Willowmoor. Sonfield was bred by the US Government Farm, and purchased by Roland G. Hill after a purchase by another party fell through. Sonfield was the sire of an astonishing two hundred thirty six registered Morgan foals. Quietude’s dam was Ruth a mare of primarily Sherman blood carrying Billy Root, Billy Bodette, Billy Folsum and Billy Roberts as well as Royal Morgan, The Streeter Horse and Ethan Allen II. She did have lines to Woodbury as well, through Gifford via Hale’s Green 7 Mountain Morgan to Gifford by Woodbury. Roseta May was the dam of thirteen Morgan foals. Her dam, Roseta Mala produced five Morgan foals. Roseta Mala was by Joaquin Morgan. Joaquin Morgan was bred by Elmer Brown of Halstead, Kansas, and sold to Roland G. Hill . He sired thirty three Morgan foals. Joaquin Morgan was by the Sellman bred Romanesque out of Margett L. Romanesque was by Red Oak out of Mariah K. Mariah K was by Headlight Morgan out of Sweet Marie by The Admiral. The Admiral was by Jubilee De Jarnette out of Morrill Queen who carried the Bulrush blood Sellman so often used. The Admiral and his daughters represents ‘core’ Sellman breeding- combining all three major Justin Morgan sons. Margett L was bred by Elmer Brown. Margett L was sired by Linsley out of Donbelle. Linsley was by General Gates out of Sunflower Maid by Headlight Morgan out of Fanny P. Headlight Morgan went back to Woodbury primarily, with Black Hawk present on a line, and Fanny P by Julian Morgan by Winnebago Chief out of a daughter of Flying Morrill- went back primarily to Bulrush Morgan with fewer lines to Woodbury Morgan and a line to Sherman. Donbelle on the other hand, was of what we call Ancient Vermont breeding and she was about a half and half mix of Woodbury and Sherman Morgan. Donbelle was by Donald out of Belle C Graves. Donald was by Ethan Allen II out of Fanny by Ethan Allen III. Belle C. Graves was by Billy Roberts – who went back to Billy Root by Sherman- out of the Hudson Mare who went back to Sherman top and bottom.{mospagebreak}

The dam of Roseta Mala was Hemala, who was the dam of seventeen Morgan foals.. Hemala was a Sellman bred mare by Headlight Morgan out of Baby Lu. Baby Lu was pure Sellman being by The Admiral by Jubilee De Jarnette out of Emma Antoine by Major Antoine out of Topsy by Major Gordon. Major Gordon was by Octoroon Jr by Octoroon, by Comet by Chittendon County Morgan by Putnam Morgan by Woodbury Morgan. There is a line to Bulrush Morgan through the Chittendon County Morgan and a line to Chanticleer by Justin Morgan through the Putnam Morgan as well. Topsy was out of an Octoroon daughter. Bess Gates was the dam of Dapper Dan. Bess Gates was by Gay Mac out of Bessie Ro. Bessie Ro was bred by Roland G. Hill. Gay Mac was US Government Farm bred by Mansfield out of Dewdrop. Dewdrop was by General Gates out of Ellen. Ellen was by Rocky 8 Mountain out of the Lamb Mare by Young Benedict Morrill. Young Benedict Morrill was by Benedict Morrill going back to Bulrush through Morrill , by the Jennison Colt by Randolph Morgan by Bulrush, on the dam’s side of the top line of the Lamb Mare’s pedigree there is a daughter of Gifford, so she also had a Woodbury cross. Rocky Mountain, sire of Ellen was by Motion by Daniel Lambert. Rocky Mountain’s dam was Alice who went back to Sherman through a lesser known son called Fox, who was the sire of Hoagland’s Gray Messenger, grandsire of Alice, and sire of her sire- Young America. Bessie Ro, dam of Bess Gates, was by Querido out of Roboss. Roboss was Sellman bred. Roboss was by Red Oak out of Bossie A.

Red Oak was by General Gates out of Marguerite. Marguerite was by White River Morgan out of the John P. Marsh mare who was by the Crocker Horse who was Sherman bred top and bottom of his pedigree. White River Morgan was by Neshobe who was a Woodbury, through Gifford, Sherman bred stallion. Bossie A , was another pure Sellman mare, being by Major Antoine out of a Major Gordon daughter. Lulin dam of Linns Lu, was by Linden Sonfield out of Brown Knox Lu. Linden Sonfield was by Sonfield out of Sallie Ann by Querido out of Sonna. Sonna was by Sooner , a Headlight Morgan son, out of Nancy, a daughter of The Admiral- so again, we have a pure Sellman bred line since Sooner’s dam was Nannie L, also by The Admiral. Brown Knox Lu was bred by Roland G. Hill. She was sired by Brown Knox out of Red Oak Lu . Brown Knox was bred by Elmer Brown of Halstead, Kansas. He was a son of Senator Knox ( Knox Morgan X Senata). The dam of Brown Knox was Myrabelle R.M. , she by Romanesque ( Red Oak X Mariah K by Headlight Morgan). Mariah K was another Sellman mare of high renown. Myrabelle R.M.’s dam was Jipsy L., also bred by Elmer Brown. She was by Linsley out of Hazel Dude. Hazel Dude was a Headlight Morgan granddaughter on her dam’s side and sired by Dude Hudson – who went back to Sherman top and bottom of his pedigree. Red Oak Lu was by Red Oak out of the Headlight Morgan daughter Fantina K., another Sellman bred mare. This is the top line of Golden Sonfield alone! His dam Shawalla Stormy brings in different yet the same bloodlines.

9 Shawalla Stormy was by Rockfield by Silver Rockwood out of Katrina Field. Silver Rockwood was by Agazizz the Juzan son out of Gizea by Go Hawk out of Liza Jane by Knox Morgan. Katrina Field was by Sonfield out of Blazie Q. by Querido out of Katrina by Joe Bailey X Lucia. Joe Bailey was by the Headlight Morgan, and bred by Sellman, his dam was Polly B by The Admiral. Lucia was by Woodrow Wilson by Headlght Morgan and her dam was Lulu Girl by The Admiral. Shawalla Contessa was the dam of Shawalla Stormy, she was by Shawalla Silver out of Luretta by Silver Rockwood. Shawalla Silver was by Shawalla Buck who was by Memphis Beau Brummel out of Mon Heir Minuet. The Mon Heir horses were from the PNW, and while Minuet’s sire was the familiar Silver Rockwood, her dam was Gratitude who brings in the bloodlines of Sea Quail and Quintessence which go back to Golddust who goes back to Woodbury Morgan as well as bringing in more Black Hawk Morgan. On Minuet’s pedigree one finds the names of Vermont Morgan, Alice Dean, Jubilee De Jarnette, Jupiter, Hale’s Green Mountain Morgan, Daniel Lambert and General Gifford. Through Luretta comes Silver Rockwood again, and Leretta by Monte L out of Loretta by Watch Charm. Monte L was by Major R.M by Romanesque out of Jumina by Jubilee King. Watch Charm was by Chief Bugler by Tyee X Gala Girl. Both of whom were by Jubilee De Jarnette. Their dams- Inee, dam of Tyee and Hostess , dam of Gala Girl were both by Lambert Boy by Lambert Chief by Daniel Lambert. Pretty , who was the dam of Watch Charm was also by Chief Bugler. Herrietta who was the dam of Loretta was by Revelation who went back to Jupiter ( Jubilee Lambert here) and to Denning Allen! Her dam was Kathleen Mollie O. by Colonel North out of Contralto. She went back to Charles Reade twice and back to Daniel Lambert and Ethan Allen 50. This is the top side of Golden Wintermist’s pedigree alone!{mospagebreak}

Shawalla Gerri, the dam of Golden Wintermist was by Shawalla Kauai King out of Wynnwood Victoria. Kauai King was by Rockfield by Silver Rockwood out of Katrina Field. Victoria was by Shawalla Man by Rockfield but out of Wilbur Nellie who is one of three horses on the bottom side of this pedigree who do not go back to Silver Rockwood! Wilbur Nellie went back to Quintessence through Sea Quail top and bottom of her pedigree. She also carried St. L who went back to the Morin 10 Horse through the Francois Bourke Horseon his sire line, his dam was Ben’s Daisy by Ben Franklin by Daniel Lambert. Along with St. L, she had Captain Jack the descendant of Black Hawk through Hercules and Herod. Woodbury is on her pedigree through Golddust, and Bulrush is present through Nick Morgan behind Captain Jack. An other non Silver Rockwood mare on her papers is Tabbie Field by Sonfield out of Tab. Tabbie Field was bred by Roland G Hill from his Sellman mare Tab by Texas Allen out of Birdie. The last non Silver Rockwood mare on this side of the pedigree is that of Lady Bee. She was sired by Blackman out of Bugle Ann. Blackman by Redman, by Mountcrest Sellman , was out of Gojea by Go Hawk out of Jeanne by Knox Reade, son of Knox Morgan out of Mrs. Lewis by Charles Reade out of the Chetco daughter Bess Franklin. Bugle Ann was by Cuyamo out of Joebie. Cuyamo was by Redwood Morgan ( bred by Sellman) who was by Headlight Morgan. Cuyamo’s dam was Jocbo Brownie, another mare bred by Roland Hill from the Sellman stock he bought. Jocbo Brownie was by Pat Allen out of Joeb. Pat Allen was by Allen King out of Patrona by Senator Reade X Black Bess by Jubilee De Jarnette. Joeb was by Joe Bailey out of Birdie by Major Antoine. Joe Bailey was by Headlight Morgan out of Polly B, a daughter of The Admiral. Joebie, dam of Bugle Ann, was by Blackhaux out of Geena by Pongee Morgan. Both Blackhaux and Geena were out of Joeb who was the dam of Jocbo Brownie. Blackhaux was sired by Redwood Morgan making him a half brother to Cuyamo. Pongee Morgan was sired by Allen King out of Galva. Pongee Morgan was bred by JC Brunk. Allen King was a full brother to Penrod sire of Jubilee King being by Allen Franklin out of Black Bess. Galva was by Billy Herod – going back again to Sherman through King Herod and Sherman Black Hawk, while Galva’s dam was Chista by Chetco by Ben Franklin by Daniel Lambert, and Chista’s dam – Lucy- was by Billy Bodette. Strong Sherman influence on this line indeed.

This is a pedigree that is called Old California breeding as well as Working Western Family. It is based on the breeding programs of many fine Morgan breeders. JC Brunk, Richard Sellman, Mabel Owen, The US Government Farm and the program of Clarence Shaw of Walla Walla , Washington. Golden Wintermist 11 carries all three of Justin Morgan’s famous sons through some of their best lines of descent. Golden Wintermist is a young mare with a great deal of very solid Old Morgan bloodlines behind her to pass on to her progeny. With the strong influence of Sherman Morgan primarily through Daniel Lambert, one can expect good strong correct legs and depth of body as well as an appearances of elegance. From Headlight Morgan one can expect excellent working ability and a fair degree of ‘cowieness’, from Knox Morgan comes the lineage of Old Vermont, the stamina, the endurance and the Morgan type that is the breed’s hallmark.
