This pretty mare is pure Western Working Family with a sire line back to Linsley through Sparfield and Sparbeau. On her dam’s side, she has two crosses to Red Correll and two crosses to Domino Joe, one of those through Wyoming Flyhawk. Her bottom mare line goes back to some excellent Jubilee King lines. Prairie’s pedigree is one of breeding strength with much of the old foundation Western Working family as well as some excellent old Brunk breeding behind it and good crosses to the Old Midwest also.

Her sire, Looking Good, is by Sparfield who was by Lee Spar, by Dude Spar, by Sparbeau, by Linsley. The dam of Sparfield, Kitty Spar Field, was also by Dude Spar. The dam of Dude Spar was a Roland Hill bred mare sired by Querido and out of a Sellman mare. The dam of Lee Spar was another Roland Hill mare, sired by Sonfield and out of a Querido daughter whose dam was by the Brunk bred Pat Allen and out of a Sellman mare. The dam of Kitty Spar Field was yet another Roland Hill mare by Sonfield. Her dam was by Joaquin Morgan, a son of Romanesque and out of a Linsley mare who was bred by Elmer Brown of Kansas. Romanesque was Sellman breeding. The dam was also Sellman bred and was a double granddaughter of the Daniel Lambert line stallion, The Admiral. This quarter of Prairie’s pedigree has great consistency and breeding strength.

The dam of Looking Good, Shawalla Tocinka, brings in more of the good blood from Looking Good’s sire as well as some other good heritage. Her sire, Rockfield, was a big stout horse who sired many excellent get. His sire was the handsome Silver Rockwood sired by the Brunk bred Agazizz who was a grandson of Jubilee King and a double grandson of that grand producing mare Liza Jane. Silver Rockwood’s dam was by the Government bred Rockwood and out of an Elmer Brown mare. The dam of Rockfield, Katrina Field, had 14 registered produce and was another Roland Hill bred mare being by Sonfield and out of  Querido by Sellman mare dam. The dam of Shawalla Tocinka was Barby Allen, sired by Ringlings Revere, from Clark Ringling’s program in the remote Nevada basin & range area. He was sired by that handsome stallion Revere, who was Government bred. The dam of Ringlings Revere was a Revere daughter, sired by the Government Dewey and with a mare line going back to Old California Spanish stock. Barby Allen’s dam, Lulu Mae was old California breeding. Her sire goes back to Sellman mares, Querido and the Brunk Pat Allen. Her dam was by Mountcrest Sellman, that excellent early California sire of note who was all Sellman breeding and the next dam was by the Brunk bred Pongee Morgan and out of another Sellman mare.

Thus, the pedigree of Looking Good is mostly old California breeding with a definite debt to the Brunk breeding and also Elmer Brown and Richard Sellman.

The dam of Prairie, Bessia’s Prairie Smoke, takes a little different direction but brings in some good old Brunk and the Old Midwest behind Red Correll. Her sire is the big, black, gaited stallion Sharthunder sired by the big black Wyoming Flyhawk. Wyoming Flyhawk is by Domino Joe who was by Stetson and out of  Midnite. While his pedigree is ¾ Brunk with some good Elmer Brown and Sellman breeding in the other quarter, Domino Joe did not look like that part of his pedigree in that he was lanky, leggy and somewhat narrow. However, he was a popular sire, having 144 registered get. The dam of Wyoming Flyhawk was a George Cross & Son Ranch bred mare bringing in some more Brunk breeding along with some ranch mares with some old New England lines. The dam of Sharthunder, Triple S Ebonella is from the ranch breeding program of the Painters of western Nebraska. She was by the big black Blackwood Correll by Red Correll. The dam of Blackwood Correll, Lady Rockwood, was also a granddaughter of Red Correll, thus bringing in more of that old Midwest breeding by the use of careful inbreeding. Red Correll’s sire was pure Old Midwest breeding—good using horses of correct conformation and type. The dam of Red Correll was an Elmer Brown bred mare by Romanesque and out of a Linsley daughter. The dam of Blackwood Correll was out of May Rockwood, dam of Silver Rockwood found on the sire side of Prairie’s pedigree. And Lady Rockwood, dam of Blackwood Correll, was by Shenandoah Red (x Red Correll) who was out of Shenandoah Queen who was by King Shenandoah by the Government Shenandoah and out of the Old Midwest mare Violet King. Shenandoah Queen was by the Brunk Rarette, a daughter of Jubilee King and out of the Liza Jane daughter Nella, an excellent broodmare in her own right. The dam of Triple S Ebonella was Triple S Red Carmen sired by Blackwood Correll and out of Lita, a Montana bred mare sired by the big correct Brunk stallion, Ken Carmen who was by Jubilee King. Lita’s dam was old Montana blood with much old Daniel Lambert line horses behind it, including the upstanding typey Chief Bugler.

The dam of Bessia’s Prairie Smoke was Bessia’s Jubarose by Domino Joe and out of Tetonia Rosa JJ who was sired by the Joanne Curtis bred Jubilee Jazz. Jubilee Jazz was truly Baroque in looks and temperament and not only had the Jubilee King sire line but two crosses to the grand Red Vermont, son of Jubilee King. Jazz’s pedigree also had some excellent Western Working Family mare lines too. The dam of Tetonia Rosa JJ, was the beautifully bred Shawna Dawn sired by the Red Vermont son Sireson. Sireson was out of a mare of pure old Sellman breeding, sired by the handsome, upheaded Captain Kellogg and out of a Captain Kellogg daughter.  The dam of Shawna Dawn was old Montana breeding whose sire was by a double grandson of Chief Bugler.

Prairie’s pedigree is one of breeding strength with much of the old foundation Western Working family as well as some excellent old Brunk breeding behind it and good crosses to the Old Midwest also.
