RANCHBOSS CORTEZ
(Primavera Valdez x Teluras Black Gold)
Stallion
Sire—Primavera Valdez
The sire of Cortez is the excellent Primavera Valdez who passed on his good temperament and attributes. Valdez brings a strongly linebred California pedigree. The sire of Valdez was the result of putting together two half-siblings, both by RoMac by Gay Mac, who was bred by the Government Farm. The 2nd dam (Gay Berta) was also by Gay Mac. The dam of Ro Mac was a full sister to the dam of Gay Berta. Gay Berta is then also found as the dam of Valdez’s dam. The mare lines of this pedigree are almost all from Richard Sellman and there are two stallion lines of Sellman’s breeding—Montabell and Sundown Morgan. There are two lines going to J C Brunk, Jane Abbey and Hilda’s sire. The pedigree also has many crosses to the Government Farm bred Querido and Sonfield who both were an important part of Roland Hill’s ranch horse program.
Valdez has a pedigree of ranch bred working Morgans throughout every line. The Government horses were all selected by the ranchers to sire good working horses. The Sellman mares bring their own heritage of several generations of carefully selected breeding for ranch use. And while J. C. Brunk was not breeding for ranch use per se, he certainly was breeding for hard-hitting working Morgans. All this adds up to a pedigree of good temperament and sense and a true working ability.
Dam—Teluras Black Gold
This mare brings a solid Western Working Family pedigree of nearly pure Old California stock. The sire line goes back to Monte L, brought to California from Montana where he sired good ranch horses. His sire was Major RM, an Elmer Brown bred stallion by Romanesque and out of a Linsley mare which is the classic Brown combination that made so many excellent using Morgans. The dam of Monte L is a Brunk bred mare by Jubilee King. The Brunk mare Gontola by Flyhawk was put to Monte L to get Waers Black Rascal, great grand sire of Black Gold. The rest of Black Gold’s pedigree is all California back to the Sellman Morgans that came to California in the 1920’s. Most of the lines go back through the breeding of Roland Hill but there is also Hearst and other old time breeders.
With these parents and their California Ranch Morgan heritage, Cortez has a rich background of sense and working ability.
