STK Black Velvet

May 10, 2007

This pretty, well-built mare has some of the best of the Whippoorwill breeding.  Her sire, Whippoorwill Ebony is a well-known and successful dressage horse.  His sire line is Red Correll.  Black Velvet has breed crosses to that grand sire Whippoorwill Duke and is a product of decades of careful breeding.  Black Velvet’s predigree is dominated by the intense Brunk breeding that is behind her on most of the lines.  It is well complimented with the Old Midwest lines through Red Correll and others.

STK Black Velvet
 AMHA #0119238
(Whippoorwill Ebony x Whippoorwill Jazzstar)
1990 Black Mare

This pretty, well-built mare has some of the best of the Whippoorwill breeding. Her sire, Whippoorwill Ebony is a well-known and successful dressage horse. His sire line is Red Correll. Black Velvet has three crosses to that grand sire Whippoorwill Duke and is a product of decades of careful breeding.

Whippoorwill Ebony’s sire is Blackwood Correll, that large, solid, correct son of Red Correll who brings to this century a most desirable pedigree of the old Midwest Morgans through his sire Will Rogers who had two crosses to the very statuesque Winterset. Red Correll’s dam, Kate Smith, was from Elmer Brown’s, of Kansas, excellent program and is by the Sellman bred Romanesque and out of a Linsley daughter. Red Correll was the sire of 92 registered Morgans and the sire of an untold number of part Morgans. Those who are today seeking working Morgans, find his line to be very valuable.

Bred to Lady Rockwood, dam of 12 registered produce, Red Correll had Blackwood Correll, who had 60 registered get, first in Nebraska for Triple S Ranch, then in the east for Whippoorwill and many others. Lady Rockwood’s sire, Shenandoah Red, was by Red Correll, thus giving further strength from that good line, and is a good example of careful inbreeding—breeding a stallion to his granddaughter. Shenandoah Red’s dam was Shenandoah Queen, out of Rarette a daughter of Jubilee King and that grand producing mare Nella. Shenandoah Queen was by Shenandoah, a Government bred stallion by Bennington and out of the Old Vermont mare Ruby. King Shenandoah was out of Violet King, a mare of intense Old Midwest lines.

The dam of Lady Rockwood was May Rockwood, by the Government bred Rockwood, he by Bennington and out of the Old Vermont line mare Carolyn. May Rockwood’s dam, May Hudson, is another Elmer Brown bred, sired by the typey Dude Hudson of Old Midwest lines and out of a daughter of Headlight Morgan. All this Old Midwest blood, based heavily on Black Hawk Morgans who went to the Midwest early on in Morgan history, gives size and strength to breed on in Blackwood Correll.

The dam of Whippoorwill Ebony is Whippoorwill Locket by Whippoorwill Duke and out of Whippoorwill Starling. Duke, known for his gentle sensible temperament as well as his handsome correct type, was sired by the upstanding Squire Burger. Squire Burger was sired by the Jubilee King son Juzan who was out of Liza Jane. Squire Burger’s dam, Nella, was out of Allen King who was a full brother of Jubilee King’s sire Penrod and Nella was also out of Liza Jane. This shows the mastery of the art of close breeding by the master breeder J. C. Brunk. Squire Burger was used in the west for ranch work and short distance racing, both of which he excelled at. Sold back east, he continued to excel at all asked of him and became a sire of note. Duke’s dam was Diana Mansfield, sired by the Government bred Mansfield (Bennington x Artemisia, Old Vermont line mare) and out of Lippitt Trixie Ash by Ashbrook and out of Lippitt Trixie.

Whippoorwill Starling was out of Whippoorwill Melody, sired by Squire Burger. Melody was out of Locket, sired by Hawk Jim. Hawk Jim, by Linsley and out of Ladyspar (Sparhawk x May Hudson), is best known for his role as sire at Devan Farm. Locket is a product of that program and is typical of that program in that her dam is by Captor, sired by Mansfield, and out of Narissa (Troubadour of Willowmoor x Ellen). Charm’s dam was a full sister to Captor. While Locket’s dam brings in more Government blood, through Hawk Jim, she also brings more of the Linsley and Old Midwest.

Starling was sired by Black Mtn. Black Cloud, a son of the gentleman Easter Twilight. Easter Twilight was by Lippitt Sam Twilight, and out of the excellent producing mare Conniedale, by Lippitt Croydon Ethan. Conniedale, dam of 19 registered produce, was out of Annadale, sired by Monterey (by Mansfield) and out of the Brunk mare Florette (dam of Flyhawk) by Allen King and out of a Knox Morgan daughter. Bald Mtn. Black Cloud’s dam was by Sealect, who was out of a daughter of Knox Morgan.

The dam of STK Black Velvet is Whippoorwill Jazstar, sired by the Whippoorwill Duke son, Whippoorwill Telstar who went to Canada to become a show ring champion and good sire. Telstar is out of Merry Bellstar, who was out of Belldale, the full sister to Conniedale, and an excellent producing mare in her own right. Bellstar’s sire was the well-known and handsome Merry Knox, by Meade a son of Glady. Glady was another excellent producer. Her dam was by Sealect (who was out of a Knox Morgan daughter) and the second dam was by Knox Morgan, bringing a nice concentration of this grand old stallion, and also complements the Knox Morgans behind most of the Brunk horses. Glady’s sire was the Government bred Mansfield and she was bred to the Government Goldfield to produce Meade, a show winner of his time.

The dam of Merry Knox was the well-bred April Showers, a lovely smooth mare of true Morgan quality. Her sire was Squire Burger and her dam was Easter Maid by Jubilee King and out of a daughter of Allen King, thus bringing more of this tight intricate Brunk breeding.

The dam of Whippoorwill Jazstar was Whippoorwill Jazana, by Oldwick Eli. His sire was all Government breeding. His dam Lapitica was by the Western Working Family stallion Dude S Sentney, bred in Kansas for working ranch conditions. He was by Juzan and out of a mare who brings more of the Old Midwest lines including Winterset. Lapitica’s dam was by Monterey and out of a mare of Old New England breeding of some different Black Hawk lines and a different line of descent from Daniel Lambert.

Jazana’s dam was Whippoorwill Jazette, a daughter of Whippoorwill Duke and out of Piankeshaw Juzana, bred in the Midwest. Her sire, Dell’s Valley Jubilee, was by Plainsman (son of Plains King by Romanesque and out of a Linsley mare) and out of the full sister of Jubilee King, Sentola. Dell’s Valley Jubilee was out of Jusista a Jubilee King daughter and a Brunk dam. Piankeshaw Juzana’s dam was Zana by Tarron (by Tiffany and out of a good Brunk mare) and out of another Jubilee King daughter who was out of an Allen King mare.

Black Velvet’s pedigree is dominated by the intense Brunk breeding that is behind her on most of the lines. It is well complimented with the Old Midwest lines through Red Correll and others. She is the result of many generations of careful, knowledgeable breeding.
